(Almost) Every Single Bowery Boys Titlecard

1946 to 1958.. Big bands to rock and roll.. The longest running feature film series of all time. 48 films in all. And the Three Stooges were the hardest working comics in film? Don't believe it, gang. Leo Gorcey and Huntz Hall produced, incredibly, four of these a year (FIVE in 1946!) for Monogram and, ultimately, Allied Artists. The three missing titles are Ghost Chasers (1951), No Hold Barred (1952), and Hot Shots (1956).. and if anyone wants to trade for those, contact me.

Having never seen the Bowery Boys movies, I have to ask -- why did Leo Gorcey (and, later, Huntz Hall)get top billing? Were their roles that much larger? Or did they have better agents?

Gorcey had a controlling interest in the series, the remainder being divided between Jan Grippo and Hall. The Bowery Boys was Gorcey's showcase from the beginning with Hall receiving the rest of the spotlight as Leo's number one stooge (and the other Boys, including the sadly neglected Bobby Jordan, fading into near irrelevance over time). Hall and Gorcey eventually jelled into a proper double act and, by 1954, Hall got the equal billing that he deserved. Leo's dad, Bernard Gorcey, was also a series regular and when he was killed in an auto accident in 1956, Leo took to drink and nearly sabotaged the shooting of "Crashing Las Vegas". He began demanding more than his 40% share and when Allied Artists refused, he ditched the series. AA simply handed the reigns (and a larger percentage, one would presume) over to Hall and hired former East Side Kid Stanley Clements to fill Leo's role as "leader" of the Boys for the remainder of the run.
